High school students taking college classes introduced to UA engineering program

On Friday, January 11, twenty area high school seniors and their parents attended College Credit Plus (CCP) Students in the College of Engineering at UA. The event was for students enrolled in the CCP program who are currently taking college classes to earn college and high school credit. 

The event was hosted in partnership with the UA College Credit Plus Program and UA Admissions and sponsored by the College of Engineering and Ohio Space Grant Consortium. 

Students who enroll in CCP are typically high achievers and good candidates for UA’s engineering program.

“In our experience we’ve found CCP students to be smart, hard-working, and naturally curious – all qualities of a good engineer,” says Dr. Craig Menzemer, Dean of the College of Engineering. “The event was a good opportunity to introduce them to what the College can offer should they choose to pursue a career in engineering.”

At the event, students learned about the engineering curriculum and heard from a panel on career opportunities. They met engineering students who participated in CCP while in high school and toured engineering labs and the Margaret F. Donovan Student Design Center. 

According to a post-event survey, the day was “very informative” and the best part of the visit was “sitting down with all the students and asking them about their experiences at UA.” Also on the list — “conversation and pizza.” 

The College of Engineering participates in over 100 events per year ranging from visits to area high schools to the on-campus UA Visit Day and CCP Visit. Since students who visit campus are more likely to apply, the College’s goal is to bring more prospective students to UA where they can tour labs, meet with faculty, and hear directly from students as to why they chose the University of Akron’s College of Engineering to launch their career.
