A team of students from the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy represented the University of Akron College of Business at the 2025 Intercollegiate Ethics Case Competition (IECC). Led by faculty advisor, Dr. Melanie McCoskey, the team of Sarah D’andres, Joshua Shull, and Hallie Wolff showcased their ability to navigate complex ethical dilemmas and present well-reasoned solutions before a panel of judges from public accounting firms and industry.

“These students dedicated themselves to the case, strengthening their teamwork skills and deepening their understanding of the accounting field,” Dr. McCoskey shared.

D’andres graduates this spring, while Shull is enrolled in the accelerated MSA program and Wolff in the accelerated MTax program.

The IECC featured teams from other Ohio institutions including Baldwin Wallace University, Case Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, Tiffin University and Heidelberg University. Beyond the case study, participants gained professional development opportunities, networked with industry leaders, and collaborated with peers from across the state.

A highlight of this year’s event was a special appearance by Lynn Turner, former chief accountant at the Securities and Exchange Commission, who shared key insights on ethical leadership in business during the awards and in closing remarks.

According to the IECC website, research shows that 80% of young professionals face significant ethical dilemmas early in their careers. Competitions like the IECC play a crucial role in preparing future business leaders to uphold integrity and protect the public interest.
