The Expungement Clinic

08/23/2011

Expungement is the process of sealing criminal records. Convictions, dismissals and no bills can be sealed.  As a volunteer in the Expungement clinic you will interview low income clients and conduct research to determine if the client is eligible for expungement.    If eligible, you will meet with the client to prepare the necessary paperwork and draft a motion to seal the record(s).  If you are a certified legal intern, you may also represent the client in court at the hearing.

The client interview and research may be conducted during the week in the Legal Clinic or may be done from home in the evenings or on weekends.  Generally, eligibility can be determined within 5 to 10 minutes.  Volunteers in the expungement program are asked to commit to one to two hours a week.
