Precision Laser & Instrument, Inc. (PLI) and Trimble, leading providers of advanced positioning technology, recently announced their partnership with The University of Akron's (UA) College of Engineering and Polymer Science to equip students in the Surveying and Mapping Program with state-of-the-art industry technology. The collaboration and donation of over $223,000 in equipment aim to enrich the curriculum and prepare students for success in the field of surveying and mapping.

UA’s Surveying and Mapping bachelor’s degree, accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, meets the professional surveyor license academic requirement for Ohio and nearly all 50 states, and students receive comprehensive training that encompasses traditional surveying skills, such as mathematics, law and mapping, as well as hands-on experience with cutting-edge geospatial tools.

As part of the collaboration, PLI and Trimble have generously provided the College of Engineering and Polymer Science with advanced technology Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, data collectors, software and accessories widely recognized in the industry. Students now have access to an array of geospatial tools, including 3D laser scanners, aerial drones, satellite positioning (GPS/GNSS), ground-penetrating radar and robotic total stations. These tools enable students to gain practical knowledge and proficiency in using modern surveying techniques.

“I am excited about this relationship with Trimble and Precision Laser & Instrument, Inc. The direct benefit will be for the students, as they will be using the latest and greatest technology on the market. When they graduate, they will be able to hit the ground running and apply those skills directly to their employer,” said Joseph D. Fenicle, assistant professor of practice in the Surveying and Mapping program.
