The NASA Mining Robotics Team at The University of Akron (UA) has emerged as a formidable force in the world of robotics, aiming to construct a reliable robot capable of competing in the prestigious NASA Robotic Mining Competition: Lunabotics. With a focus on reinforcing classroom knowledge and honing workplace skills, this award-winning team, predominantly composed of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering majors, welcomes all robotics enthusiasts to join their ranks.

Lunabotics took place this year at the University of Alabama and the competition's primary objective is to challenge participants to design and build a robot capable of collecting sand on a simulated lunarscape. By simulating lunar conditions, the competition prepares participants for the engineering complexities that arise during space exploration missions.

This year, the UA NASA Mining Robotics Team demonstrated their prowess, making notable improvements from the previous competition. Through meticulous effort and dedication, they achieved seamless connectivity with every component of their robot, ensuring optimal performance and coordination. Their excavation and scissor lift mechanisms worked exceptionally well, showcasing the team's technical expertise.

Despite the hurdles they faced, the team showcased their skills and determination during the competition. Their efforts were rewarded with an impressive 8th place ranking out of approximately 50 competing teams in NASA's overall rankings. The team's project management plan received the highest score possible, a testament to their meticulous planning, organization and execution. Their success reflects their ability to effectively apply their classroom knowledge and engineering principles to real-world challenges. Notable teams who competed included Purdue, The University of Tennessee, UCLA and Virginia Tech among many others.

Participation in Lunabotics offers students an invaluable opportunity to reinforce their classroom knowledge and enhance their workplace skills.
