'Shakespeare in the Spring' event is April 22

04/16/2010

“Happy Birthday Shakespeare” will be the theme of the 2010 Shakespeare in the Spring event, sponsored by The University of Akron Department of English. This event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Thursday, April 22 at the Martin University Center, 105 Fir Hill.

A performance session will begin at 3:30 p.m., led by UA theater arts professor Susan Speers, with local actors performing selected scenes from Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.”

At 5 p.m., the lecture “Shakespeare’s Revolution, or the Truth Unveiled by Time” will be delivered by Scott Maisano, professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

Immediately following the lecture will be the Shakespeare Essay Prize Contest awards ceremony, at which two top prizes — one graduate and one undergraduate — and two honorable mentions will be awarded for papers written on Shakespeare for UA English department courses.

A Shakespeare gala birthday party with hors d’oeuvres and birthday cake will cap off the event.
