NASA Mining Robotics Team supports local robotics competition for middle and high school students

The University of Akron’s (UA) NASA Mining Robotics Design Team, in collaboration with Firestone Community Learning Center (CLC), played a pivotal role in the success of the Dan Spak Memorial VRC Blended Robotics Competition held on November 11 at Firestone CLC High School. With a total of 98 teams participating, the event showcased middle and high school students interested and involved in robotics and STEM activities at their schools.

From the NASA Mining Robotics Team, 13 members, including four officers, participated in various roles throughout the day to help the tournament run smoothly:

  • One member served as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the competition, keeping participants and spectators engaged.
  • Two team members worked at the queuing tables, ensuring that teams moved seamlessly throughout the day and made it to their matches on time.
  • Four members helped with scorekeeping.
  • The remaining six members focused on judging engineering notebooks and conducting interviews with teams.

In addition to the NASA Mining Robotics Team, representatives from other UA Student Design Teams, including Phalanx Robotics, Zips Baja, and Zips Racing Combustion, helped and contributed to the success of the tournament.

"We had such a great turnout,” commented Samantha Grindley, Vice President of the NASA Mining Robotics Team. “We always love giving back to the community and helping kids see their potential!"

Congratulations to the students and teachers who participated in this year’s competition and thanks to UA’s design team members for supporting the local community and STEM education.
