Seniors say “I do” to engineering at ceremonial ring ceremony
On April 18, 82 engineering seniors participated in the Engineer’s Ring Ceremony, a time-honored tradition for individuals entering the field of engineering. By accepting the ring and participating in the ceremony, engineers pledge to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession.
The ring ceremony was initiated by The Order of the Engineer, an association for graduate and professional engineers. It emphasizes a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, bridges the gap between training and experience, and presents to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.

The first ring ceremony and reception was at Cleveland State University in 1966. The second ceremony was held in Akron in February 1971 and included University of Akron seniors and practicing engineers.
UA’s ceremony included a short program with remarks on the history and significance of the order by Dr. Joan Carletta, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, as well as a keynote from Dan Peterman, Manager of Race Tire Development at Bridgestone, B.S. Electrical Engineering ’85.
