Frontiers in Polymer Chemistry

Professor Roderic P. Quirk officially retired from The University of Akron this past June 30, 2010. Quirk, who joined UA in 1983, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Appointed Interim Director of the Maurice Morton Institute of Polymer Science in 2006, Quirk assumed the responsibilities of Interim Director of the combined Institute of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering in the fall of 2007; Quirk was reappointed July 1, 2009 for another year-long term as Interim Director of the combined institute. Also the Kumho Professor & Distinguished Professor of Polymer Science, Quirk manages a technical support staff that provides instruction and service for students and faculty in laboratories dedicated to electron microscopy, polymer characterization, polymer processing, and a variety of other research essentials. Quirk's research interests center on anionic polymerization.

A symposium, reception, and student picnic were held in Quirk's honor May 13-15, 2010. The symposium was co-chaired by Professor Rudi Faust of UMass and former Quirk student Dr. Joe Pickel.

The College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering thanks all of those who attended the events and wishes Dr. Roderic Quirk a happy retirement!
