Polymer College’s 2019 Research Experience for Undergraduates Program Begins

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, launched in 2004, has been a success in bringing students from across the country to learn about research methods and polymers here at The University of Akron’s College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. The 2019 summer internship program began May 28th and will offer 11 weeks of competitive research and career development experience to 17 students.

REU provides valuable work experiences and rare resources, opportunities to work alongside graduates in the field, and the ability to learn more about polymers through different disciplines such as engineering, chemistry, physics, and biomaterials. The summer of research culminates in an oral or poster presentation of each intern’s research results at the annual Northeast Ohio Undergraduate Research Symposium. The students who complete REU often return to study at The University of Akron to earn a PhD Degree in Polymer Science or Polymer Engineering.

The internship, which is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) as well as REU-supplemental funding from NSF, has provided valuable experience for hundreds of undergrads who have been able to use that experience to their advantage in their careers.
