The University of Akron now offers certain degree programs as five-year accelerated bachelor’s and master’s degrees, meaning students can complete their bachelor's and master's degrees in as little as five years instead of the usual six or more years, while realizing significant savings. The computer science program is one of these new accelerated offerings.

During a student’s senior year, they will complete coursework that counts toward both the bachelor’s and master’s degree. They can double count a minimum of nine hours (at a cost savings of at least $4,000). These nine double-counted hours are charged the undergraduate tuition rate resulting in the additional savings.

“This is a good option for computer science students eager to start their career but are looking for a deeper understanding of computer theory, algorithms, and computer network design,” says Tim O’Neil, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Computer Science and Computer Information Systems.

In order to be eligible, students must have a minimum cumulative 3.30 GPA in second semester of their junior year. They do not need to take the GRE in order to participate in the program.

Doug Rudy, a computer science student from Wooster, is in his senior year of study. He is currently enrolled in the accelerated degree program.

“After talking to professors and faculty members, I decided that the graduate degree will be invaluable when I am in the field,” says Rudy. “Though computer science graduates are in demand, competition is high for the really good jobs so I believe this will help me stand out. It also made sense from a timing perspective as I can pursue this degree while finishing my undergraduate career at the same time.”

The program offers high level training for current and future computer programmers and web developers. Schedules offer a range of day, evening and weekend classes. Learn more and view all accelerated degree options.
