School of Communication Accelerated Degree Pathway

Earn your bachelor's and master's degrees faster while saving money! The Accelerated Degree Pathway (ADP) program is a 5-year combined degree program for our School of Communication undergraduate programs (Communication Studies, Media Studies, Organizational Supervision, Public Relations) and M.A. in Strategic Communication. Qualifying students can complete up to 8 credits of graduate coursework during their senior year. Upon satisfactory completion of their undergraduate degree and meeting graduate admission requirements, students seamlessly transition into our M.A. program. Through this pathway, students can earn both their undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Akron in just 5 years!

OVERVIEW OF ADP CURRICULUM

Students enrolled in the ADP program start their graduate coursework while still enrolled in their undergraduate degree program. Eight credit hours of graduate coursework taken during students’ senior year counts toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. An example ADP program plan can be found below:

Senior Year Fall Semester:

  • COMM 600 Introduction to Graduate Study in Communication (2 graduate credits)
  • COMM 540 Strategic Social Media (3 credits)
  • Required undergraduate coursework (10 credits)

Senior Year Spring Semester:

  • COMM 510 Crisis Communication (3 credits)
  • Required undergraduate coursework (12 credits)

ADP ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Junior Student Status (completed 60+ hours of undergraduate coursework)
  • Minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA
  • Letter of Intent
  • Two letters of Recommendation from School of Communication Faculty
