Veggie-fruit carving team competes nationally, wins freestyle

The University of Akron carving team placed first out of four in the Individual Freestyle section of the Carve IV national collegiate fruit and vegetable carving competition Oct. 1 in Howland, Mich.

Led by Chef Richard Alford, associate professor emeritus of hospitality management, student team members Jennifer Bogart, Cinneaia Johnson and Angela Mathie created a whimsical sculpture, "For the Birds."

Individual placements of Johnson in second, Mathie in fourth and Bogart in fifth out of 12 spots in the freestyle secured the team a winning placement in this competition category.

Meanwhile, Johnson placed fourth out of 12 in the compulsory section. UA took fourth of four teams in the overall contest.
