Alan Newman Receives 2011 Outstanding Professor of the Year Award

Professor Alan Newman received the 2011 Outstanding Professor of the Year Award at The University of Akron School of Law 2011 commencement ceremony.

Each year, members of the law school's graduating class nominate professors for the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award. The class then selects from among the top nominees and presents the award at the law school's commencement ceremony.

"The preparation, enthusiasm and joy that Professor Newman brings to each class is inspiring," said outgoing SBA (Student Bar Association) President J.J. Hammerle. "His command of the subject matter is unsurpassed, and his ability to convey that knowledge to his students is worthy of this honor. When students leave Professor Newman's class, they are not just prepared for the bar exam, they are prepared to practice law."

Newman joined the School of Law faculty in 1996. He teaches courses in wills, trusts and estates and accounting and finance from a lawyer's perspective. Newman received his bachelor of accountancy, as well as his J.D. degree, from the University of Oklahoma. He was the valedictorian of his law school class, a member of the Order of the Coif and the articles editor of the Oklahoma Law Review.

Wide range of experience benefits students

Newman is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He also is an academic fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a certified public accountant. Newman is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Probate Law Journal of Ohio and recently served as the reporter for the Joint Committee on the Ohio Trust Code of the Legal, Legislative and Regulatory Committee of the Ohio Bankers League and the Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law Section of the Ohio State Bar Association.

His recent publications include the third edition of the volume of the Bogert, Trusts and Trustees treatise on the reporting and accounting duties of trustees; Revocable Trusts and the Law of Wills: An Imperfect Fit, 43 Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Journal 523 (2008); The Trustee’s Duty to Keep Beneficiaries Reasonably Informed, 21 Probate Law Journal of Ohio 17 (Sept./Oct. 2010); and The Uniform Trust Code: An Analysis of Ohio's Version, 34 Ohio Northern University Law Review 135 (2008).

Newman was also voted Outstanding Professor of the Year in 2007, 2001, 2000 and 1998.
