Flocking flutes, jazz singer Maureen McGovern in Kulas series lineup

A flock of flutes, jazz singer Maureen McGovern, and an exhilarating Collage performance by rapidly appearing and disappearing musicians are part of the 2010-11 season of the Kulas Concert Series at The University of Akron.

Supported by the Cleveland-based Kulas Foundation, the Kulas Concert Series is the UA School of Music’s foremost series and features outstanding guest artists, faculty and students.

Season subscriptions for all eight performances are $65. Single tickets for the Maureen McGovern concert on March 25 are $20 general admission and $10 for students. Single tickets for the other concerts are $10 for general admission; $8 for seniors, UA faculty, staff, alumni, and parents of current UA students; and $5 for non-UA students. Admission is free for UA students who show their Zip Card.

The performances are at Guzzetta Recital Hall, 139 E. Buchtel Ave., or E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, 198 Hill St. Parking is available in nearby parking decks and surface lots.

The 2010-11 season opens with Idle Twittering on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. at Guzzetta Recital Hall. A flock of flutes from Northeast Ohio will twitter the Romantic, chirp the Baroque, tweet the Modern and whistle some jazz. Flutists George Pope, Jane Berkner, Kyra Kester, Diane McCloskey, Janet Becker, Linda White and Rich Shanklin will perform with percussionist Larry Snider.

A highlight of the season is Collage on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Thomas Hall. Widely popular, Collage concerts are breathtaking showcases by top music schools around the country. Akron’s 90-minute nonstop concert will keep audience members on the edges of their seats as performers appear and disappear throughout the concert hall. A reception in the lobby follows the performance.

Also during 2010 in the UA School of Music’s Kulas Concert Series: Verlezza Dance with guest pianist Laura Silverman and soprano Patricia LaNasa on Nov. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Stage Door of Thomas Hall; and Jingle Jazz on Dec. 12 at 3 p.m. at Thomas Hall.

In 2011: The UA Symphony Orchestra with guest pianist Spencer Myer on Monday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Thomas Hall; SoloDuo featuring classical guitarists Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli on Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. in Guzzetta Recital Hall; an intimate evening with singer Maureen McGovern on March 25 at 8 p.m. at the Stage Door of Thomas Hall; and Solaris Woodwind Quintet with guest pianist Paul Nitsch on April 10 at 3 p.m. at Guzzetta Recital Hall.
