The University of Akron’s Summit College received the Community Leader for Literacy Award from Project Learn of Summit County on April 27 for assisting high school graduates through their transition to an associate degree program. Summit College collaborates with Project Learn by directing prospective students through the admissions process and other steps toward college.
Summit College, which offers more than 40 associate and nine baccalaureate degrees and numerous technical certificates and minors at UA, presents programs such as College Day to help guide students and their parents through admission and financial aid application. Summit College also offers a summer developmental program to help incoming freshmen polish their mathematics and writing skills prior to the start of fall college courses.
Summit College Dean Stan Silverman accepted the award on behalf of the college at an awards ceremony held at UA’s Martin University Center. Guest presenters at the ninth annual event included Jeff Gove of the Ohio Board of Regents, who presented for Chancellor Eric Fingerhut, and David Harvey, president and CEO of ProLiteracy, an international organization of adult literacy and basic education programs.
