UA and the National Inventors Hall of Fame School Honor Heroes of United 93

04/30/2010

The National Inventors Hall of Fame® School, The University of Akron and the organization “93 Cents for Flight 93” are joining together to honor the passengers and crew of United Flight 93 who sacrificed their lives in an effort to save lives on the ground during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on Washington, D.C., and New York City.

On Friday, April 30, the students at the STEM School will participate in “Track and Field Day” at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. The track and field day is the culmination of a week filled with educational activities on the events surrounding United Flight 93 along with creative drives to help raise funds to build the United Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa.

Students learn lessons of courage and patriotism

The 40 passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 are widely known to have thwarted a terrorist attack on a national target in Washington, D.C., most likely the U.S. Capitol. All week, students have been paying tribute to them for their unselfish deeds of courage and patriotism.

Groups from UA supporting the track and field day include UA Athletics, Delta Sigma Pi (professional business fraternity), WZIP-FM and the Army ROTC. UA students will assist 5th and 6th graders from The National Inventors Hall of Fame® School in the track and field events.

The National Inventors Hall of Fame® School-Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Learning’s 14 “Learning Advisories” conduct year-long service learning projects aligning with the 8 National Standards of Quality Service-Learning. Service-learning has allowed the learners to become better classmates, and citizens which has further enabled them to make valuable contributions to their communities. Learners, in collaboration with their coaches, conduct these service-learning projects on a yearly basis.

About “93 Cents for Flight 93”

The “93 Cents for Flight 93” campaign is a grassroots initiative with a twofold purpose: educate today’s youth on the story of Flight 93 (specifically on the concepts of heroism, patriotism and courage demonstrated by the passengers and crew) and to help raise funds for the construction of the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pa. This campaign is an official program of The Hope Always Lives On, (HALO) Foundation (Akron, Ohio) and the Flight 93 National Memorial Campaign.
