Art, music and dance in this spring's UA Arts-in-Residence Series

04/21/2010

Art in advertising, a Silver Lake serenade and a look at cross-cultural connections in dance are the intriguing topics in this spring’s Arts-in-Residence Series offered by The University of Akron’s College of Creative and Professional Arts.

Jazz pianist Joe Augustine, an artist-in-residence at UA, will perform May 5.

Hosted in the fascinating homes of area residents, the Wednesday programs begin at 7:30 p.m. and feature presentations by UA faculty. Delicious refreshments are included.

Space is still available for the May 5 and May 12 programs. The April 28 program is sold out.

Each program is $35. Advance registration is required. Proceeds support scholarships for students in the College of Creative and Professional Arts, and all registration fees are fully tax deductible. Contact Cyndee Snider at 330-972-5196 or cyndee@uakron.edu for more information and to register.

“Are We Buying It? Artists Subvert Advertising” by art historian Kevin Concannon

Wednesday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. — SOLD OUT —

Hosted by Laura and Fred Bidwell

Sometimes delightful, sometimes disturbing, works of art in advertising can make us wonder if we’re being sold or if we’re being conned — or perhaps both. In this entertaining talk, Kevin Concannon will illustrate how artists from Marcel Duchamp to Jeff Koons use advertising media. We’ll take a look at print ads, billboards, television spots, Internet marketing and even guerilla advertising.

Host Laura Bidwell is a graduate of The University of Akron’s Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. Fred is the president and CEO of Malone Advertising. Headquartered in Akron, Malone is a leading retail marketing specialist agency. The Bidwells are opening their contemporary, ultra-cool home in Peninsula for this provocative program.
