Ty Green moved his family across the country from his home in Chandler, Arizona, to attend The University of Akron School of Law. While he had family in the Akron area to help him adjust, the law school’s academic offerings and other amenities made the even decision easier.
“What stood out to me about UA, specifically the law program, is the professors that they have. The professors, as well as the different programs. I felt that was really top notch and gravitated toward that,” Ty says. A recipient of The Sharon L. Black Law Student Family Scholarship and The Geraldine D. and John G. Stoller Fund awards, Ty raves about the interaction with faculty and others in the law school.
“Probably, dealing with the professors has been part of my favorite experiences. They’re incredibly knowledgeable and personable,” Ty says. “Anytime I had a question or if I’m struggling with a specific topic or just certain situations within the law that I wasn’t quite getting, they took the time to really help me understand what I needed to understand.”
Ty says the counsel he has received beyond his legal studies has been beneficial as well. “I have three kids and a wife, and so they’ve helped me handle (managing) a work life as well as a student life. That’s been very helpful for me in terms of finding the balance that I need to be able to do all the responsibilities I have in life.
Throughout his legal studies, Ty made it a point to get involved with student groups, a feature he believes has made him a better student. “Do the activities, join the groups. Specifically, do either one or more of either trial team, law review,” Ty says. “Employers look to (a student’s activities) these experiences; they are practical.”
While pursuing his law degree hasn’t been the easiest project he’s taken on, Ty says his work ethic, instilled by his parents as well as their examples have guided him. “That work ethic is a really a great asset that I’ve been able to keep and nurture and stick with it. It factors in law school, which is a time intensive,” he adds.
“Having a strong work ethic to just push through, even when you feel like not doing something, to just continue, reading the cases that you need to read, it’s all benefited me.”
As Ty’s law school career nears its conclusion and he prepares for the next phase of professional life, he considers his Akron experience a success. “Success for me is always moving. It’s always to try and increase and do better to see what I’m capable of. It’s just trying to continue to push myself to the next step.”
