The University of Akron’s (UA) Surveying and Mapping Program recently received a $10,000 Surveying Education Award from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).  This annual award recognizes surveying/geomatics programs who best reflect the NCEES mission to advance licensure for surveyors to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

“We are beyond grateful for the award money,” says Joseph D. Fenicle, assistant professor of practice and licensed professional surveyor. “Funds will go towards setting up a new surveying curriculum to be used with local high school career centers to increase the talent pipeline for future professional surveyors. We will also now be able to send students to the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio conference to engage with industry professionals and attend continuing professional development sessions to make them more marketable when they graduate.”

Any remaining funds will be used for updating new hardware and software to keep up with the constantly evolving technology.

The University of Akron’s Surveying and Mapping Program, the only accredited program of its kind in Ohio, has won this award five times since its inception in 2016, including the $25,000 Grand Prize in 2018. Our proud alumni represent public, private and academia, at all levels, across the United States.
