Fateme Emami received an NSF-sponsored fellowship to attend the Foundations of Molecular Modeling and Simulation (FOMMS) 2012 conference held in Mt. Hood, Oregon, July 22-26, 2012. Emami is a doctoral student with Dr. Hendrik Heinz.
Jinwei Cao (left) and Senlong Gu (right) won second place for their video, "Amazing Polymer!" in the 2012 SPI Student Video Competition. The judges, plastics industry professionals who serve on SPI's Communications & Marketing Advisory Committee, found the video to be engaging and well-executed for this year's theme, "Plastics Mean Innovation." For their efforts, the students were awarded $1,500 plus a $3,000 prize for the polymer engineering program. Kushal Bahl was selected to receive a 2012 Ohio Rubber Group Award. He will receive $3,000 and will be asked to attend periodic ORG technical meetings and present on his research. Bahl will be recognized at a luncheon to be held in early 2013. He is a doctoral student studying with Dr. Sadhan Jana.
Sepideh Niknezhad and Hadi Ramezani-Dakhel were selected as the 2012-13 polymer engineering student recipients of the Ticona Excellence in Engineering Plastics Awards. These awards are given each year to two students in their second year of doctoral study who also have the highest GPA and qualifying exam scores, in addition to their advisor input. Niknezhad's advisor is Dr. Sadhan Jana while Ramezani-Dakhel is studying with Dr. Hendrik Heinz. The students will each receive $500 and recognition from Ticona at a luncheon to be held later this year.
Mauricio Echeverri was selected as the 2012 polymer engineering student recipient of the Frank N. Kelley Graduate Student Award. This award is given each year to one student in polymer engineering and one student in polymer science, each in his/her fourth year of graduate study at The University of Akron, on the basis of the student's research and course work performance in the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. The Kelley Award honors the College's Dean Emeritus, Dr. Frank N. Kelley. Echeverri, who is completing his doctorate under Dr. Thein Kyu, will receive $1,000 at an awards luncheon with Dean Emeritus Dr. Frank N. Kelley and Mrs. Judith Kelley.
Gurpreet Singh was chosen as The University of Akron recipient of the 2012-13 Eastman Chemical Fellowship, which recognizes a student's academic and research success.. The fellowship will provide a $5,000 award to Singh and a trip with his advisor, Dr. Alamgir Karim, to visit the Eastman facility in Kingsport, Tenn., and give a presentation on their research.
