UA School of Law Financial Aid
UA is committed to supporting you as you pursue your legal education.
There are many financial aid options available. Most law students use some combination of financial aid shown below to finance their legal education. Below are steps students should take to secure their financial aid.
Gaining Eligibility
Students will need to file a Free Application for federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov. The FAFSA will be available in October of every year. The tax documentation needed for the FAFSA will be from 2 years prior.

Viewing Financial Aid and Accepting/Declining Awards
Viewing & accepting Aid
Log into Workday through MyAkron to accept your federal aid:
- Menu – Financial Hub (May need to add the app)
- View Financial Aid then select correct aid year
- Accept/Decline Awards
- Must accept/decline loan for both semesters (you are able to reduce loans as well)
- Submit
Next steps for aid to disburse
Once you accept your loan, go to www.studentaid.gov to:
- Complete the Entrance Counseling (Choose Graduate/Professional)
- Complete the Stafford Master Promissory Note
If additional funding is needed
Apply for Graduate Plus Loan and complete Grad Plus Loan Promissory Note
(Available to apply on May 1st)
- Go to www.studentaid.gov
- Apply for Grad Plus Loan (Loan is based on Credit)
- Complete Loan Agreement for Plus loan (MPN)
- Once approved, the loan will be awarded directly to your financial aid package
Apply for Private Loan
(Loan and interest rate based on credit)
- FASTChoice – website where most of the popular private lenders list their private products
- Select Private Lenders for Law Students
- Pick one lender to apply. Once approved, The University of Akron will be notified by the lender to certify and award the private loan
Disbursements
Aid applies as anticipated aid on your invoice, then ten days prior to the start of the term, it changes to actual aid and any excess aid will be refunded through the Cashier’s Office. To view Account, go to Workday in your MyAkron then to Financials Hub
Maintaining your Aid
At the end of each semester, we are required to run Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress. A student must meet GPA and completion requirements to continue to receive aid. For more information go to www.uakron.edu/finaid/maintaining-aid.

Professional students are eligible for $20,500 maximum per year until they reach their aggregate limit of $138,500.
Grad Plus loans do not have an aggregate limit. You can borrow up to your cost of attendance per year with an approval.
Interest rates change yearly and are posted by the Department of Education. They take effect on July 1st of every year.
Yes. Grad Plus and Unsubsidized loans need a separate promissory note.
The Grad Plus loan is available starting May 1st for the upcoming fall semester. Summer Grad plus loans should be applied for as soon as you register for summer courses.
Law students are considered professional students and are always listed as independent students.
Yes. There is no limit to the number of Grad Plus loans a student can have per year. The only limit on a Grad Plus loan is up to your cost of attendance.
Students will receive their refunds via a paper check unless they have signed up for direct deposit through workday.
