Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need - Environmental Sustainability Fellows at The University of Akron

We are excited to announce the GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) fellowship in Environmental Sustainability at The University of Akron's (UA’s) College of Engineering and Polymer Science. This prestigious interdisciplinary program aims to support talented graduate students dedicated to pursuing PhD degrees in Engineering, with a focus on Environmental Sustainability and a passion for teaching in higher education and research.

Fellows in our Environmental Sustainability Program will receive an annual stipend of up to $37,000 along with full tuition coverage while enrolled in our PhD program. They will engage in impactful research addressing critical environmental issues and collaborate closely with faculty in civil and chemical engineering. Additionally, the program offers training in teaching and mentoring, along with other professional development opportunities to help fellows become effective educators. Initial target start date for the GAANN Sustainability Fellows is Spring 2025.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Enrolled full-time in or admitted to the doctoral program in Civil Engineering or Chemical Engineering (at UA)
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA)
  • Strong academic potential and interest in sustainability

Application Process:

We encourage interested candidates, including those that contribute to broadening participation in engineering, to submit their applications starting November 15, 2024, until positions are filled to Dr. Teresa Cutright (tcutrig@uakron.edu).

Application should include:

  1. A personal statement detailing your interest in environmental sustainability and career aspirations. Statement should also include any previous leadership and community involvement activities.
  2. Submit FAFSA to UA Financial Aid Office. (The 2024-2025 FAFSA can be used for students staring in Spring 2025. The 2025-2026 FAFSA can be submitted after December 1st when FAFSA window opens).
  3. A current CV/resume.
  4. Three letters of recommendation
  5. For new students, submission of required materials (see www.uakron.edu/graduate/ for full details) to UA Graduate School. The same recommendation letters and personal statement can be used for the Graduate School.
