Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering!

Welcome to a department of engineers looking to – quite literally – build a better, sustainable, more stable world. Students can expect a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum that includes practical laboratories, a variety of engineering courses, and a capstone senior design experience along with immersive learning opportunities with the cooperative education program and award-winning design teams.

Alumni from our civil engineering program have participated in developing infrastructure of many great cities and small townships, developed new structural materials and applications, and worked on a wide variety of environmental issues to improve quality of life.

The accomplishments of our graduates have been exemplary, and it is our job to continue to shape the future of civil engineering with cutting-edge research and new advances in student learning.

The Department of Civil Engineering offers an accredited 131 credit hour Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree. In addition, Associate of Applied Science degrees and ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degrees are offered in Construction Engineering Technology and in Surveying and Mapping. At the graduate level, we offer a Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree and an interdisciplinary PhD degree.

The opportunities available to students beyond the classroom are part of their well-rounded and unique educational experience at UA. Our undergraduate students have a competitive advantage when they participate in the cooperative education program, which provides practical, paid professional experience in industry. Our graduates are in demand by industry, and many have jobs lined up prior to graduation.

Design teams provide additional valuable experience to students and strengthen bonds with classmates. The American Society of Civil Engineering Student Chapter has grown into an active student-run organization that strives to promote the professional development of civil engineering students through curriculum-enriching activities, presentations, and competitive projects. Every year the Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams compete with other schools on the regional and national arenas, bringing home awards and making us all proud to be a Zip. In Spring 2018, the Concrete Canoe team placed third in surveying, second in site civil design and first in many concrete canoe races as well as won the Spirit of the Competition Award, a top honor given to the team that displays the most school pride as well as reaches out to other teams with support. The Steel Bridge team finished second overall at the American Institute of Steel Construction Student Steel Bridge Competition and qualified for Nationals.

Significant financial support from the civil engineering community translates to numerous scholarships available to new and existing students alike. We are committed to our students’ success and offer tutoring programs, learning communities, and opportunities to meet one-on-one with professors.

Thank you for choosing UA's College of Engineering. I look forward to seeing you on campus!
