The Alberta M. and William C. King Scholarship was established in 1991 as a memorial to Alberta M. King. The scholarship recognizes Mrs. King's belief in the value of higher education and Mr. King's appreciation of his civil engineering degree earned at The University of Akron. One King Scholarship is awarded to an engineering major by the College of Engineering, and one King Scholarship is awarded to a mathematics major by The Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics. Recipients must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better. The scholarship may be renewed in the following year if the recipient maintains the academic qualifications.

During the spring semester each year, the Departmental Scholarship Committee solicits nominations and finalizes the list of scholarship recipients.
