Biography
MAJ Gregory J. Boyes was born in Medina, OH on 03 May, 1984. He graduated from Medina Senior High School on 24 May, 2003. MAJ Boyes graduated Cum Laude from The University of Akron in 2010 with a Bachelors of Arts and Science in Political Science with a minor in Criminal Justice Technology and Military Studies and Tiffin University in 2017 with a Master of Business Administration with an Emphasis in Leadership. His military education includes United States Army Basic Training, U.S. Army Quartermaster Petroleum Specialist School, Infantry MOSQ School, Warrior Leader Course, Reserve Officer Training Corps Program, United States Army Airborne School, Air Defense Officer Basic Course, Combined Logistics Captain’s Career Course and Public Affairs & Communication Strategy Qualification Course.
MAJ Boyes enlisted in The Army Reserves on 19 August 2002. Following the completion of Advanced Individual Training on 19 November 2003, he served as a Petroleum Specialist with the 428th Quartermaster Company, Harvard Rd, Cleveland, OH. MAJ Boyes was promoted to the rank of Specialist in August 2004.
MAJ Boyes transferred to the Ohio Army National Guard, Delta Co. 1-148 INF (M), North Canton, OH on 03 June, 2005. He graduated from the Infantry MOSQ Course at the Yakima Training Center Yakima, WA on 28 August, 2005. During September 2005, MAJ Boyes served as a search and rescue operator and conducted security patrols in New Orleans, LA in response to Hurricane Katrina.
He was deployed to Kosovo (KFOR8) as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle driver and dismount Infantryman from June 2006 to November 2007. While in Kosovo, he attended Warrior Leader Course. MAJ Boyes earned the Army Achievement Medal for his service in Kosovo.
On 06 February, 2009, MAJ Boyes contracted with The University of Akron Reserve Officer Training Corps Program. During this time he drilled with the 1484th Transportation Company, North Canton, OH as an SMP cadet. He was awarded The American Legion General Military Excellence Award during his senior year.
Upon receipt of his commission, MAJ Boyes was assigned as a Platoon Leader to Charlie Battery 2-174th Air Defense Artillery in May 2010. He graduated from Air Defense Artillery BOLC at Fort Sill, OK on 28 February, 2011. MAJ Boyes was mobilized on 15 September, 2011 in support of Operation Noble Eagle, National Capital Region (NCR) and served as a Tactical Control Officer for the National Advanced Surface To Air Missile System. While conducting pre-mobilization training at Fort Bliss, TX, MAJ Boyes graduated from the NASAMS Fire Distribution Center Operator Course on 30 September, 2011. He served as the OIC for the NASAMS Live Fire Exercise (LFX), which consisted of successfully launching two AIM-120 missiles and one AIM-9X missile. While in the NCR, MAJ Boyes completed 12 credit hours towards his MBA in Leadership at Tiffin University and ran the Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon with his tactical control assistant enlisted counterpart. MAJ Boyes earned the Army Commendation Medal for his service in the NCR.
MAJ Boyes transferred to Alpha Company 237th BSB in May 2013. He served as Platoon Leader for 3rd Platoon (Fuel and Water) until September 2014. He went on to serve in the 237th BSB S3 section as the Plans Officer from September 2014 to August 2016 and as the S4 from August 2016 to February 2017. He took Command of Fox Co 237th BSB on 25 February 2017 and remained in Command until 01 April 2019. MAJ Boyes served a second company Command with HHC 237th BSB from April 2019 to May 2020.
On 22 March 2020, MAJ Boyes was activated for Operation Steady Resolve as the plans officer for Task Force Workhorse, Joint Task Force Fox, Ohio Army National Guard. On 15 June 2020 he was promoted to Task Force Workhorse OIC and served in this position until 10 November 2020. While Task Force Workhorse OIC, MAJ Boyes managed and led all HR, operations and logistics functions for 100 Soldiers stationed across four food banks in Northeast Ohio. In July 2020, CPT Boyes earned his SHRM-CP certification to prepare for his transition to an HR career in the private sector. MAJ Boyes earned a second Army Commendation Medal for his service during Operation Steady Resolve.
On 12 November, 2020, MAJ Boyes transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve. He was assigned to HHD, 38th Regional Support Group in Cross Lanes, WV. He served as the BDE Public Affairs Officer until 01 August 2022. MAJ Boyes graduated from the Public Affairs & Communication Strategy Qualification Course at Fort Meade, MD on 17 September, 2021.
On 02 August, 2022, MAJ Boyes transferred to the 4-413th REGT, 1st BDE, 104th DIV (LT) at Fort Knox, KY. His current role is Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Akron Army ROTC program.
MAJ Boyes’ awards and decorations include the Army Parachutist Badge, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, NATO Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and the Driver and Mechanic Badge W/Driver-Wheeled Vehicles. OHARNG awards include The Ohio Award of Merit, The Ohio Special Service Ribbon and the Ohio Faithful Service Ribbon/Medal. Other awards include the Louisiana Emergency Service Medal.
MAJ Boyes has held many titles throughout his military career. However, his most prized title is “father” and enjoys spending his free time with his two boys, Logan and Emmett.
