MIXED-GENDER HOUSING

Sex-segregated housing may not be suitable for some students. To address this, the Department of Residence Life and Housing offers mixed-gender housing.

Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis to provide comfortable and safe living spaces. Mixed-gender housing is not available for romantic couples.

Options Available

Option 1: Mixed-Gender Community

Students can select this option by completing the Mixed Gender Housing Application after they complete their housing and dining contract. It allows roommate group formation and room selection with a roommate of a different legal sex. These spaces are available in various buildings with private bathrooms. Participants must sign the mixed-gender housing agreement.

Option 2: Contact reslife@uakron.edu

Requests outside the Mixed-Gender Community must be approved and are dependent on availability. Options include:

• Mixed-gender suites and apartments
• Roommates of different legal sexes with a private bathroom
• Single rooms on the floor of the student’s legal sex, if a private bathroom exists

Costs may vary, and agreement from all parties is required. Staff will keep disclosed information confidential. Email reslife@uakron.edu early to explore housing options.

Option 3: Select a Room Independently

Options that do not require office involvement include roommates of the same legal sex but different gender expressions.
