Welcome to The University of Akron Trumpet Studio!
The trumpet studio at The University of Akron is composed of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in music education and performance. Qualified undergraduate students receive scholarships and financial aid for merit and academic achievement. Additionally, Akron offers a graduate teaching assistantship (tuition waiver and $10,000 stipend) which includes trumpet studio and performing requirements with various large and chamber ensembles.

Performance opportunities
All trumpet students can participate in a variety of ensembles, including trumpet ensemble, brass choir, marching band, concert band, jazz band, and orchestra. Students can also participate in masterclasses with world-renowned musicians and travel to trumpet festivals and competitions. Our UA trumpet ensemble has been selected to compete at the National Trumpet Competition 3 years in a row!

Dr. Jim Johnson is one of many University of Akron School of Music Professors who offer their time and commitment to each student in their program. Trumpet Faculty
Dr. Jim Johnson currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at The University of Akron. He earned his D.M. in Trumpet Performance from The Florida State University, his M.M. in Trumpet Performance from Kansas State University, and his B.S. in Music Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
He currently performs with Conspiratus Brass, a brass duo that promotes new music by North American composers. Their first self-titled CD released in 2020 consists of music commissioned specifically for this ensemble.

Dr. Johnson is also an accomplished arranger, having his music performed at the National Trumpet Competition, the William Adam International Trumpet Festival, the Kansas Music Educators Association All-State Conference, and the Haus Marteau Brass Chamber Workshop in Lichtenberg, Germany.
Before coming to The University of Akron, Dr. Johnson was the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Kansas State University, where he performed with the Kansas State University Faculty Brass Quintet and served as the Principal Trumpet of the Salina Symphony Orchestra in Salina, Kansas.

Trumpet Audition Requirements
Undergraduate
- Audition: Required. Auditions can be individually scheduled, held via zoom, or held on one of the School of Music Audition Days.
- Accompanist: Not needed.
- Repertoire: Solo of choice (OMEA list preferred), major scales, sight-reading.
Graduate
- Audition: Required. Auditions can be individually scheduled, held via zoom, or held on one of the School of Music Audition Days.
- Accompanist: Not needed.
- Repertoire: Two contrasting solo works or a solo and etude. Also, prepare 3-5 orchestral/wind band excerpts.
