To support our faculty, staff and contract professionals mental health and well-being we have events scheduled below.

Finals week

Monday May 2

Food trucks for finals week celebration, head out!

  • Head outside this week with colleagues and enjoy the fresh air! Delicious items Southern Thangs, a local Akron business will be served from 11:00am-2:00pm on Coleman Common.

Friday May 6

Mental Health First Aid Certification

  • Pre-register by May 3 for this eight-hour course by emailing Greg Luli at gluli@uakron.edu

Rubberducks game

  • Bring your family or plan a night out with your office! The Rubberducks are offering a special for UA employees – just $12/ticket for the game on May 10.

Wednesday May 11

True Colors: Understanding yourself and how to balance stressors

  • Join us to learn more about your leadership style and preferred communication methods. By understanding yourself and your team, you can reduce stress and better navigate interactions. This workshop will be hands-on and participants will walk away with tangible resources.

    Starbucks Mingle

    • 8:15 - 9  a.m., Student Union Starbucks Lounge
    • Before the 9am speaking event, come grab some Starbucks and mingle with colleagues in the Lounge! The first 20 attendees will receive a $2 discount toward your Starbucks order that morning. Those planning to attend the speaking event that morning will travel together to the Student Union Ballroom shortly before 9 a.m.

    Active Minds keynote speaker Dr. Kristen Lee, also known as “Dr. Kris”

    • 9 a.m. at Student Union Ballroom
    • Join us to hear from Dr. Kristen Lee, also known as “Dr. Kris”, an internationally recognized, award-winning behavioral science professor, clinician, author, activist, and Active Minds speaker from Boston, Massachusetts. As the Lead Faculty for Behavioral Science and Faculty-in-Residence at Northeastern University, Dr. Kris’ research and teaching interests include individual and organizational well-being and resilience, particularly for marginalized and underserved populations. Dr. Kris’s work has been featured on NPR, Ted and CBS radio. Her TedXtalk, The Risk You Must Take has over 310k views. Dr. Kris will be joining us from Active Minds, the nation’s premier nonprofit organization supporting mental health awareness and education for young adults.

    Webinar: Understanding Mental Illness

    • More and more, individuals find themselves supporting someone with a mental health issue or needing support themselves. But despite the prevalence of mental health issues, stigma and misunderstanding persist. In this webinar, participants will learn about common mental health conditions, how to seek and find help, and how to support others.

    Join us for a bicycle mini tour over the lunch hour!

    • Colleagues from the Student Recreation and Wellness Center will lead the tour. Bikes are available for free through the Bike Share program, spots are limited to ten participants.

    • Join colleagues at a community lunch spot and to visit with local organizations and benefits vendors. A wellness fair, featuring on and off-campus resources, will be available throughout the duration of the event. Reserved seats for lunch will be marked in Union Market. Bring your lunch and enjoy the company of colleagues!

    Self-care Stones

    • 11a.m. - 1 p.m.
    • Piano Lounge - Student Union
    • Art is a great form of self-care and positive messages provide motivation and affirmations. We invite you to join us in the Piano Lounge of the Jean Hower Taber Student Union to create a painted stone for campus or your office. No skills needed, all supplies will be provided.

    QPR - Suicidal Thinking, Behavior, Attempts prevention training

    • 2 - 3:30 p.m. at Student Union
    • QPR Training will be offered free of charge for up to 15 colleagues. Training will be held in the Jean Hower Taber Student Union. QPR is a Suicidal Thinking, Behavior, Attempts prevention training for participants to be able to recognize the warning signs of Suicidal Thinking, Behavior, Attempts and question, persuade, and refer people at risk for Suicidal Thinking, Behavior, Attempts for help.

    Campus Cupboard Service Project

    • 11 to 1 p.m. in Simmons
    • Join the Campus Cupboard for a service project from 11am-1pm in the Simmons Hall lobby. Volunteers will inventory, sanitize, and label recent donations collected from residential students. Please can come and go as needed, your help is appreciated!

    • Do you know what to expect when you see a therapist? Having some information about what to expect can help make seeking out support a little easier. Learn about mental health from Dr. John Queener, professor in the Department of Psychology.
