Tiered Mentoring Program

Fast and Furrrr-ious: Unleashing the Biomechanics of Agility Dogs

Dr. Rachel Olson and Brendan Seitz

SEITZ Fall 23 Tiered Mentoring.pngOVERVIEW:
The Olson lab works agility dogs, this project is specifically focused on biomechanics and kinematics of agility dogs. The goal of the research in the lab is to prevent injury for agility dogs. We are currently analyzing videos of the dogs using DeepLabCut, a machine learning-based animal tracking software. This software allows us to quantify the dog’s gait, stride length and variation between breeds. The Olson Lab works in collaboration with The Ohio State University Veterinary Program and The Georgia Institute of Technology.

What would you learn?:
A student in this lab will gain the following skills: understanding of the scientific process and method, proficiency in Adobe products such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Media Encoder, baseline knowledge of Python coding and R-Statistical Computing, proficiency in DeepLabCut (machine learning animal tracking software) and in Microsoft products such as Excel and Word.

Commitment:
There will be a 10 hour/week expectation of a student. We will work around your classes throughout the semester. A student in the lab will be taught to do the listed criteria above as well as any other necessary guidance.
