Graduate Admission

All applicants for admission to the graduate program in statistics must meet the university requirements for graduate admission as published in the Graduate Bulletin of The University of Akron. All foreign graduate students must demonstrate proficiency in English. Applicants must also submit three current letters of recommendation.

In addition, entrance into the M.S. Statistics program requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 and completion of the following prerequisites prior to starting the program:

• Three Semesters of Calculus or equivalent
• One Semester of Applied Statistics or equivalent

Applicants who have not taken the required prerequisite courses will be required to complete them prior to start of the program. The Department of Statistics does not require GRE or any other qualifying exam. Full admission is solely based upon the academic record and fulfillment of the required prerequisites with a minimum of GPA of 2.75 or 3.00 for the last two years (64 semester credits or equivalent). All international applicants, U.S. citizens, and Permanent Residents whose native language is not English must submit evidence that they have a sufficient level of English to undertake graduate studies at The University of Akron in order to receive full admission. Assistantships

The Department of Statistics offers limited number of graduate teaching assistantships for qualified graduate students. These assistantships provide a waiver of tuition (excluding fees) in addition to a bi-weekly stipend. All students who have received full admission can be considered.  First round of screening starts on the third week of January, and continues until positions are filled up to April 15th.  First round of offers are typically made in March.  

Applications received after April 15th cannot be considered for assistantships, but can still be considered for either fall or spring admission.

Graduate teaching assistants are required to teach general education Statistics computer labs.  We require students be proficient in English as demonstrated by achieving a minimum of 23 on the speaking portion of the IBT or have completed and passed a course of study in English.

In addition, international students who are requesting a graduate assistantship must have an F1 visa to be considered. Even though we have no specific deadline for applications.

Core Curriculum

Non-thesis requirements (30 credits of graduate work)

In addition to the core curriculum, students must take 2-3 credits in 3470:692 Statistics Master’s Paper, 1-2 credits in 3470:595 Statistical Consulting, and 10-12 credits of other approved elective graduate credit hours must be completed. Upon approval of the Statistics Master’s Paper by the student’s advisor and reader, the paper must be presented in a colloquium to faculty and students.

Thesis requirements (30 credits of graduate work)

In addition to the core curriculum, students must take 2-3 credits in 3470:699 Master’s Thesis, 1-2 credits in 3470:595 Statistical Consulting, and 10-12 credits of other approved graduate electives. Upon approval of the thesis by the student’s advisor and reader the thesis must be presented in a colloquium to faculty and students.

Master's students who bas Bachelor's degree from UA

If a student has completed any of 451 (Theo Stat I) / 452 (Theo Stat II) / 480 (Statistical Data Management) / 462 (Reg & ANOVA) as a part of undergraduate study at UA, he/she does not need to enroll in 551/552/580/665 respectively. Instead, student will enroll in 553 (Theo1-1cr) / 554 (Theo2-1cr) / 582 (SDM-1cr) / 669 (Regression Encore-1cr) respectively. 

Students have a total of six years to complete the masters degree.
