An undergraduate social work student, Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.), who is a volleyball senior, has been selected by the Mid-American Conference as the MAC East Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday, Oct. 8.

"Kayla has had a great start to the MAC season. She's been a very efficient hitter for us while point scoring at a good clip for us," said head coach Tom Hanna. "The growth she's had as an attacker since her arrival at Akron is really starting to show up in her play every time we take the floor."

Gwozdz led Akron to a 2-0 weekend with a total of 29 kills. In the sweep over Buffalo, Gwozdz recorded 15 kills on a season-best hitting percentage of .481. She added 14 kills in the five-set win against Toledo. Over the two matches, the senior left side hitter averaged 3.63 kills per set.

On the season, Gwozdz is averaging a team-best 3.11 kills per set. Gwozdz's average, along with her total of 205 kills, both rank eighth in the MAC standings. She also paces Akron with 223 total points, which ranks 10th in the MAC.

Akron returns to action on the road at Northern Illinois on Friday, Oct. 12, at 8 p.m. (EST) and at Western Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. The Zips match against Northern Illinois will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the contest at Western Michigan will air on ESPN3.
