Declaring a Philosophy Major or Minor

Any questions related to declaring a Philosophy major or minor can be directed to the following:

To declare PHILOSOPHY as your MAJOR:

Contact the Dean’s Office of your current college and let them know you want to declare a major in Philosophy.  Your Dean’s Office will begin the paperwork to transfer you to the Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences.  If you are already in the College of Arts & Sciences, you can go to the Philosophy Department (CAS 454) or the BCAS Advising Office (CAS 118) to fill out the appropriate paperwork to change your major.

To declare PHILOSOPHY as a SECOND DEGREE:

Contact the College of Arts & Sciences Advising Office in CAS 118.  You must receive permission prior to beginning a 2nd degree.  Note that pursuing a 2nd degree will extend your time to graduation, as you must complete 30 additional credits above those required for the 1st degree, 15 of which must be at the 300/400 level.

To declare PHILOSOPHY as a SECOND MAJOR:

Visit the Philosophy Department (CAS 454) or the Arts & Sciences Advising Office (CAS 118) and complete a short one-page form.  This form will be processed for you, and the 2nd major will be added to your official record.  Pursuing a second major will not necessarily extend your time to graduation, as the total number of credits needed to graduate is not increased—it remains at 120 credits, 40 of which must be at the 300/400 level.

To declare a PHILOSOPHY MINOR:

Visit the Philosophy Department (CAS 454) or the Arts & Sciences Advising Office (CAS 118) to complete a short one-page form.  This form will be processed for you, and the Minor will be added to your official record.
