Technology Tools for Construction

This course equips students with practical skills in technology utilization, document preparation, problem-solving, and business communications within the context of construction management. Students are introduced to important professional topics and computing skills for construction managers including software for estimating, scheduling, presentations, general business administration, project communications and tracking.

Course Rationale

Construction technology continues to advance and is transforming the industry. This course will expand students’ knowledge of technology for construction project management. The benefits of applied technology in construction are vast, including better communication, collaboration, enhanced safety, improved quality control and efficiency. The use of digital tools and data management programs has become more prevalent, facilitating seamless communication among stakeholders. Project managers, design teams, architects, engineers, and contractors can collaborate effectively, share updates, and address issues promptly. All these things lead to improved project outcomes, increased productivity, and a safer work environment.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain proficiency in using various computer applications relevant to construction management. These tools include software for business communications, data management, and analysis.
  • Gain an understanding of how to leverage technology for efficient communication, data organization, and decision-making in today’s construction industry.
  • Create and manage construction-related documents
  • Master preparing properly formatted and accurate documents for effective project execution
  • Learn basic spreadsheet development for data management and cost estimating
  • Use scheduling software used to create project timelines, allocate tasks, and manage critical paths.
  • Use software to create compelling presentations.

Educational Background

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering: Delving into structural design and foundation engineering.
Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering: Specializing in high-performance concrete research with pozzolanic byproducts.
Undergraduate Certificate in Biomimicry: Exploring innovative approaches inspired by nature for sustainable design.

Professional Experience

Teaching at the University of Akron since 1999, guiding students in construction engineering.

Program Director: Overseeing curriculum development and industry collaboration in the ABET-accredited Construction Engineering Technology Program.

Accreditation Expertise: Ensuring quality education through assessment and accreditation matters, including ABET and HLC.
American Council on Education Contributor: Reviewing and recommending college credit for military training in civil and construction engineering.

Entrepreneurial Ventures: Completing the NSF I-Corps program to bridge academia and industry.
Bio-mimicry Enthusiast: Graduating from Bio-mimicry Launchpad and University of Akron’s Bio-mimicry Research and Innovation Center’s Certificate Program.
