In 2023, Ohio became the eighth state to pass legislation to license art therapists – but the profession has more than 85 years of history. Art as Therapy? is a new exhibit examining the history, training, and practice of art therapy. Based primarily on the collection of local art therapist Heidi Larew, visitors are presented with the question that has divided the field since its origins: is art a tool for use within psychotherapy or a therapeutic act in and of itself?
Uncover the realities and nuances of art therapy this September when Art as Therapy? opens at the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology.
