Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeastern Ohio

Join the coauthor of “Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeastern Ohio”, Judy Semroc, and UA Biology professor Randy Mitchell to explore the diversity and biology of this fascinating group of insects. Meets at the University of Akron Field Station (Bath Nature Preserve), with field trips to many other nearby sites. Emphasizes hands-on experiences and engaging brief lectures. Open to all.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the basics of Odonata morphology, behavior, and ecology
  • Recognize and identify Odonata of Northeastern Ohio
  • Understand the relationship between Odonata and their ecological context

MEETS:Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:00 pm–4:30 pm (No class on July 4)

About Your Instructors

Judy Semroc

Judy-semroc.jpgConservation specialist, field biologist, and naturalist Judy Semroc has 25+ years of experience offering hands-on exploration based learning programs. As a former Petroleum Geologist and science teacher, Judy loves to learn about and share her passion for the natural world through hikes, interpretive programs, and photography.

Judy is the founder of Chrysalis in Time‚ the first Ohio chapter of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). Judy also serves on the board of the Ohio Bluebird Society & Ohio Ornithological Society (Conservation Committee). She has co-authored two natural history guides, “Dragonflies & Damselflies of Northeast Ohio” in 2008, and “Goldenrods of Northeast Ohio: A Field Guide to Identification & Natural History” in 2017.


Dr. Randy Mitchell

Randy-mitchell-field.jpgDistinguished Professor of Biology University of Akron; PhD Biology UC Riverside, MS Biology UC Riverside, BS Entomology UC Davis. Teaches Entomology, Bee Biology, Field Ecology, Wetland Ecology and many other field-oriented classes.  Extensive ecology research and natural history experience in Northeastern Ohio.
