Written by Maxin Gorky, The Lower Depths depicts a group of impoverished Russians living in a homeless shelter and is considered a staple of Russian social realism. The Lower Depths explores the dichotomy between the harsh truths of the characters’ reality and the comforting lies that pervade their lives. Most of the characters choose to delude themselves over the bleak reality of their condition. The play first premiered in 1902.
