Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Records, Photographic Prints and Negatives Series

Range: 1912 - 1984 Size: 772 cubic feet Record Group: 99/106

The Photographic Prints and Negatives Series of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Records consists of approximately half a million images that visually document the history of the company from 1912-1984.  The images depict a variety of topics including factory scenes and equipment, lighter-than-airships, parade balloons, employees, company farms and plantations, numerous rubber products, professional and amateur sports, automotive and motorcycle racing, advertising, aeronautics, women in the workplace, war-time production, and Goodyear’s extensive line of passenger, commercial, and other tires.  Formats include glass plate, nitrate, and acetate negatives in addition to black and white and color prints and slides.  All images from 1912-1951 have been digitized and are available on our Digital Collections Website.


Evans, Opie, Papers

Range: ca. 1940 - 1990 Size: 32 Record Group: 99/246

Opie Evans (1906-2000) was an African-American photographer, reporter, broadcaster, publisher, and businessman in Akron, Ohio who accomplished many firsts for African-Americans in the city.  His papers consist of correspondence, photographic prints and negatives, newspapers and publications, and sound recordings that document the life and work of Evans in addition to the African-American community in the Akron area.

Dales Family Papers

Range: 1895 - 1972 Size: .86 Record Group: 99/181

The George S. Dales Company was founded by George S. Dales Sr. in 1876. Known for selling jewelry, instruments, and Victrola's, it was handed down to George S. Dales Jr. and then to Gerald L. Dales and lasted until 1969. George Dales Jr's other son, George Franklin Dales, founded the George Franklin Dales company in 1946. Working with Mechanical Industries Production Company, he invented the Mighty Mite Thermostat. Included in the collection are 39 Glass plate negatives showing images from around the turn of the 19th-20th century.

Cain, John W.

Range: 1890 - 1930 Size: 1 cubic foot Record Group: 99/86

John W. Cain was a contractor from Akron, Ohio who married Emma Von Kanel, widow of Walter H. Bowman, a photographer from Canton, Ohio who died in 1912. The photographs were mostly taken by Walter Bowman and John Cain and primarily include professional portraits of the Cain and Von Kanel families during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also included are snapshots of family members and their travels as well as buildings and neighborhoods in Akron, Massillon, and surrounding areas. The collection also contains some postcards and family correspondence.

B-26 Marauder Archives, Wilfred "Wally" Berg Collection

Range: 1941 - 1945 Size: 1.0 Record Group: 100/37

Wilfred T. “Wally” Berg (1908-2002) was an artist from Muskegon, Michigan who served as the photographer for the 17th Bomb Group of the 95th Bomb Squadron during World War II. He was stationed in North Africa, Italy, France, Austria, and Germany. His collection consists of photographic prints and negatives and notes on World War II as well as an extensive scrapbook made by Berg that includes photographs, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia.

B-26 Marauder Archives, C. Forman “Dee” Dirickson Collection

Range: 1941 - 1946 Size: 1.8 Record Group: 100/39

C. Forman “Dee” Dirickson (1919-2007) was a 1st Lieutenant and B-26 Marauder pilot in the 451st Squadron of the 322nd Bomb Group of the 9th Air Force during World War II. After the war he served as a corporate pilot. His collection consists of materials from his time as a pilot during World War II including flight logs, orders, photographs, maps, memorabilia, and records from pilot training.

B-26 Marauder Archives, Anthony F. Mugan Collection

Range: 1942 - 1946 Size: 0.5 Record Group: 100/252

Anthony F. Mugan (1919-1994) of Sheboygan, Wisconsin was a Technical Sergeant in the 345th Service Squadron of the 310th Service Group attached to the 319th Bomb Group during World War II. His collection includes letters, postcards, photographs, publications, and enlistment records of his friends in the service during the Second World War as well as a history of the 319th Bomb Group.

B-26 Marauder Archives, 319th B.G. Reunion Association Records

Range: 1934 - 2001 Size: 20.05 Record Group: 100/26

The 319th Bombardment Group was a group of bomber aircraft in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It was originally attached to the 12th Air Force, mostly flying B-26 Marauders in the North African and Italian campaigns, but was later attached to the 7th Air Force in the Pacific Theater. The 319th Bombardment Group Reunion Association was organized in 1974 to plan reunions of members and preserve the group’s history, but disbanded in 1999. The association’s collection consists of newsletters, photographs, correspondence, printed materials, and videos created and collected by the association and its members.

B-26 Marauder Archives, 17th B.G. Reunion Association Collection

Range: 1920 - 2011 Size: 24.23 cubic feet Record Group: 100/27

The 17th Bombardment Group was a group of bomber aircraft in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. It was attached to the 12th Air Force and participated in numerous missions, including the Doolittle Raid, but mostly operated in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations and over Germany, typically flying B-26 Marauders. The group also served during the Korean conflict. The 17th Bombardment Group Reunion Association was organized in 1977 to plan reunions of group members. The association’s collection consists of correspondence, military records, newsletters, photographs, printed materials, and videos created and collected by the association and its members.
