Vallen, George D.

The papers of George Dales Vallen Senior document George’s experiences during World War I.  His diary and correspondence covers the nine months before his enlistment, his time in the American Expeditionary Forces until he returned home on April 13, 1919.  Also included is a biography of George’s life written by his grandson in 2013, a picture of George in uniform, a picture of Company “F”, Company “F” rosters, maps of United State and German Division movements during WWI, photos of the 73rd Brigade of the 37th Division, a diary that had belonged to H.G. Lafferty a friend of George’s, correspondence between Charles Ustine and The American Battle Monument Commission, Mexican Border Patrol photographs and a two volume set on the history of the 37th Division during WWI.  Researchers interested in the experience of an enlisted man during the Great War or the war in general would find this collection useful.   To view the Letters and Diaries.

The Private Industry Council (PIC) of Akron was formed in 1978 as an outgrowth of President Jimmy Carter’s Private Sector Initiative Program.  The records consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, booklets, pamphlets, reports, surveys, photographs, and advertisements relating to PIC activities, including job training and hiring programs and advertising campaigns to attract new businesses to Akron.

Polsley, John J.

Lieutenant Colonel John J. Polsley served in the American Civil War in the 8th Regiment Virginia Volunteers, which later became the 7th Regiment West Virginia Cavalry. Polsley was captured in 1863 and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. The papers primarily contain correspondence to his wife, Ellen (Nelly) S. Donnally Polsley. He wrote of camp life and battles as well as his thoughts on war. Also included are letters to his father, Judge Daniel H. Polsley.

George W. Parker served as a pilot of a B-26 Marauder with the 397th Bomb Group during World War II.  He went on to serve a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, served three terms as a Missouri state representative, and was a founder of the Marauder Historical Society.  This collection consists of materials documenting the Second World War including mission reports, flight logs, diaries, notebooks, photographs, and publications.  This collection also includes materials on various B-26 Marauder and 9th Air Force reunion groups.

American Legion Post 209 in Akron, Ohio records consists of meeting minutes, financial records, correspondence, photographs, membership lists, articles of incorporation, and the constitution and bylaws of the post. Included in this collection are the WWI photographs and letters that were collected by Goodyear Tire and Rubber as part of the company’s recognition of its employees who served during WWI.  These were later donated to Post 209 since many of Goodyear’s veterans joined this American Legion Post.

Akron Regional Development Board Records
