Alumnus Jimmy Mays, distinguished scientist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville/Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been named a fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award from The University of Akron's Department of Polymer Science.
The ACS Fellowship program recognizes ACS members for "outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession and the society." According to the ACS, fellows exemplify excellence in research and development, teaching and leadership in an organization within the chemical sciences. Mays will be recognized at the ACS National Meeting, Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 in Denver.
In October, the UA Department of Polymer Science will honor Mays with the 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award for leadership in polymer research and development. Mays, whose research is focused on polymer synthesis, has published more than 300 papers, presented nearly 500 lectures and received numerous awards for his work in polymer science. He will be honored at an Oct. 7 symposium at the UA Goodyear Polymer Center.
