10/27/2010

The University of Akron’s Summit College and Akron Public Schools’ Early College High School (AECHS) was one of three district public schools recognized as a “School of Promise” by the Ohio Department of Education for demonstrating substantial progress in ensuring high achievement for all students.

Firestone High School and Windemere Elementary School also were commended for outperforming others in the nation with high numbers of indicators from 2009-10 state annual report cards. The “Schools of Promise” also exceeded the state standard of 75 percent passage in mathematics and reading for the 2009-10 school year and met yearly progress standards.

Olin Clay, an AECHS senior, was recently named one of 19 Northeast Ohio semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Clay competed in the academic competition, which recognizes outstanding Black American high school students. More than 160,000 students enter the National Achievement Scholarship Program each year. As a semifinalist, Clay will have the opportunity to advance in the competition for National Achievement scholarships.

Clay is a member of the National Honor Society, currently holds a 3.815 GPA and plans to graduate from AECHS in May with an associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

The Akron Early College High School has grabbed headlines in recent months, touted for its designation of “Excellence” on 2009-10 report cards issued by the state of Ohio.
