For the second time in three months, University of Akron President Luis M. Proenza was invited to participate in a national dialogue on the future of higher education in the United States. On May 27, Proenza was a featured participant in a leadership workshop of university presidents, policy leaders and industry CEOs to discuss initiatives to further the transformation of higher education in a rapidly changing world.
In February, Proenza joined members of President Barack Obama’s administration, including Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, and other higher education leaders in a dialogue about Obama’s “national innovation strategy” to increase support for research at America’s universities.
The current forum, the “Presidents’ Symposium on the Future of Collegiate Education,” sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and George Mason University and held at the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities in Washington, D.C., brought together presidents of the most entrepreneurial and innovative universities with business leaders and policymakers to define a vision of higher education that will meet the challenges and realize the opportunities of the 21st century.
Proenza presented the lead commentary in the panel discussion, "Learning by Design — Technology and the Classroom." Proenza also participated in the closing panel discussion with the other college presidents, including Alan Merten of George Mason University and Angel Cabrera of Thunderbird University of Global Management.
