Jorgen Petersen (1822-1904) of Peninsula, Ohio was a canal boat captain on the Ohio & Erie Canal in the mid-1860s and ‘70s. He mostly hauled coal, iron ore, and merchandise for stores along the canal. His diaries consist of 11 personal diaries kept by Peterson during his days hauling freight on the canal and chronicle his life and work on the canal from 1864 until 1880.  View the Petersen Diaries

Ohio Canal Sesquicentennial Commission Records

The Ohio Sesquicentennial Commission was organized in 1977 as a subcommittee of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Its chief objective was to inform the public of the economic and historical significance of the Ohio Canal for the canal's 150th anniversary. The records include correspondence, fundraising materials, publications, and newspaper clippings that document the work of the commission during its two-year program.

Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems Records

Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems in Akron, Ohio was the successor of Goodyear Aerospace, a former subsidiary of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The records mainly cover the development and manufacturing of airships and include photographs, photograph albums, and glass plate slides. Of special note are the factory construction logbooks and photographs depicting the assembly of the airships U.S.S. Akron and the U.S.S. Macon.

Gross, Alan “AirshipAl” Collection

Alan “AirshipAl” Gross is an airship aficionado and collector of all things airship.  He worked on the ground crew at the Flushing Airport in New York City and helped found two airship companies, Airships International Ltd. and Airship Enterprises Inc.  The collection includes information on various airships important in the history of lighter-than-air flight including the Goodyear, Budweiser, SeaWorld, Shamu, MetLife, Fuji, and Jordache blimps, to name a few.  Materials include press kits, flight manuals, drawings, books, journals, newspaper clippings, photographs and slides, videotapes and films, musical scores, phonograph recordings, inflatables, clothing, and airship toys and collectibles.  View the photographs and slides from the collection here.


Erie Lackawanna Railroad Records

The Erie Lackawanna Railroad operated from 1960 to 1976 running from New York City through Akron to Chicago. The records include annual reports, meeting minutes, valuation maps, real estate sales files, land agreements, leases, mortgages, conveyance documents, and other legal and financial records. Also included are materials from the 1938 Erie reorganization, the 1960 Erie-Lackawanna merger, and the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western and Erie Railroads.

Theodore J. “Ted” Dettling (1904-1992) was a co-owner of Dettling Bros. Floral & Seed Company in Akron, Ohio (later known as Dettling Florists). Ted Dettling was a canal and local history enthusiast, and this collection contains records of the Canal Society of Ohio and Summit County Historical Society as well as published and unpublished materials, maps, and photographic prints and negatives, mainly documenting Ohio canals

Cascade Locks Park Association

Baus, Louis Canal Photograph Collection

Louis Baus, photographer, shot numerous scenes along the Ohio & Erie, Miami & Erie, and the connecting feeder canals. This collection of over 400 photo negatives portrays a sense of canal life during the late 1800s to early 1900s. Found in this collection are images of canal boats, crew and passengers, as well as various locks, businesses and homes along the canal ways.

Akron, Canton & Youngstown Railroad Company Records

The Akron, Canton & Youngstown (AC&Y) Railway Company was incorporated in 1907. Operation of the railroad, which originally ran from Akron to Mogadore, Ohio began in 1912, but later acquisitions and mergers led to 171 miles of track running from Mogadore to Delphos, making connections at 21 different junctions with nine different railroads. The records include articles of incorporation, minute books, stock records, maps, and other materials that document the history of the AC&Y Railroad Company and its predecessors and other affiliated railroads.

Akron Women’s Chapter of the National Aeronautic Association Records
