The Portage Trail Group of the Sierra Club was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1972. The group advocated for a number of local environmental causes including the creation the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Today, it offers public education programs, lobbies for outdoor recreation, and offer scholarships for environmental education. The records include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, bylaws, histories, photographs, budgets, directories, newspaper clippings, maps, newsletters, publications, financial records, subject files and VHS tapes that document the history and work of the group. The records also contain some materials relating to the national organization.


Ohio Canal Sesquicentennial Commission Records

The Ohio Sesquicentennial Commission was organized in 1977 as a subcommittee of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Its chief objective was to inform the public of the economic and historical significance of the Ohio Canal for the canal's 150th anniversary. The records include correspondence, fundraising materials, publications, and newspaper clippings that document the work of the commission during its two-year program.

Ninth Air Force Association, Archives of the

The Ninth Air Force is a numbered air force of the United States Air Force Air Combat Command that carried out tactical bombing of enemy targets in support of the Allied ground forces and engaged in air to air fighter combat against enemy aircraft in the North African Campaign and European Theater of World War II. The Ninth Air Force also engaged in combat operations during the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. The Ninth Air Force Association (9AFA) was established in 1990 to broaden public knowledge of the deeds and history of the Ninth Air Force and to honor and commemorate the sacrifices made by its members. The Archives of the 9AFA includes newsletters, membership lists, reunion programs, and photographs. It also contains unit histories and personal papers such as diaries, photographs, and oral histories of individuals who served in the Ninth Air Force, predominantly during World War II.

Lighter-Than-Air Society Collection

The Lighter-Than-Air Society (LTAS) is a non-profit organization founded in Akron, Ohio in 1952 that promotes the history, preservation, and education of the airship industry and serves as a caretaker of the rich heritage of lighter-than-air flight. The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, books, speeches, newspaper clippings, publications, and films documenting the history of lighter-than-air flight and the LTAS.

The Kiwanis Club of Akron was founded in 1916 as the sixth Kiwanis Club in the world. Its members include community leaders that engage in meaningful service and hold relevant speaking engagements that keep members informed on local issues. The records document the club's history, its organization, financial information, membership, activities, and relationships to other organizations.


Jacobson, John and Betty, Papers

John M. Jacobson (1911-1992) and Betty Virginia (Heberlein) Jacobson (1917-2007) of Akron, Ohio owned and operated the John Jacobson Company, General Contractors. The couple were very active in numerous community organizations including the Akron Art Museum, Akron Civic Theater, Akron General Hospital, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, Weathervane Theater, and The University of Akron. Their papers including correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, photographs, and negatives that document their life and work and numerous community organizations.

Flower, Robert D., Collection

Robert D. “Bob” Flower is a long-time resident of Stow, Ohio and member and trustee of the Stow Historical Society. His collection includes aerial photographs of Akron, a scrapbook of the Akron Naval Reserve, a map of Summit County, hard copies of the Akron Beacon Journal, and memorabilia from Polsky’s Department Store and Akron Central Hower High School.


Dettling, Theodore J. “Ted” Collection

Theodore J. “Ted” Dettling (1904-1992) was a co-owner of Dettling Bros. Floral & Seed Company in Akron, Ohio (later known as Dettling Florists). Ted Dettling was a canal and local history enthusiast, and this collection contains records of the Canal Society of Ohio and Summit County Historical Society as well as published and unpublished materials, maps, and photographic prints and negatives, mainly documenting Ohio canals

B-26 Marauder Archives, Wendell A. Fetters Collection

Range: 1944 - 2012 Size: 1.36 Record Group: 100/29

Wendell A. Fetters (1924-2015) of Iowa served as a tail gunner on a B-26 Marauder in the 391st Bomb Group, 574th Bomb Squadron of the 9th Air Force during World War II. He flew 25 missions until being shot down and captured, spending the rest of the war in a German prison camp. After the war he served as an account representative and marketing manager and as Vice Commander and then Commander of the 391sth Bomb Group Association. His collection consists of correspondence with members of the 391st Bomb Group Association, newsletters, memoirs, and histories of the 391st Bomb Group.

B-26 Marauder Archives, George W. Parker Collection

George W. Parker (1923-2009) served as a B-26 Marauder pilot with the 397th Bomb Group during World War II. He went on to serve a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, served three terms as a Missouri state representative, and was a founder of the B-26 Marauder Historical Society. His collection consists of materials documenting the Second World War including mission reports, flight logs, diaries, notebooks, photographs, and publications. His collection also includes materials on various B-26 Marauder and 9th Air Force reunion groups.
