Catherine R. Dobbs was an Ohio State Senator from 1949-1950 and the Mayor of the city of Barberton, Ohio from 1956-1961. Her papers contain correspondence, speeches, lectures, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other materials from her service in the Ohio legislature as well as her time as Mayor of Barberton. The papers also include various materials associated with her political and social activities after leaving office.

Gale Dixon served as Chief Engineer for the Bureau of Water Works Improvement for the City of Akron, Ohio. Dixon’s papers relate to her career and Akron's water supply and include biographical information, reports, publications, topographic maps, and miscellaneous materials.

Theodore J. “Ted” Dettling (1904-1992) was a co-owner of Dettling Bros. Floral & Seed Company in Akron, Ohio (later known as Dettling Florists). Ted Dettling was a canal and local history enthusiast, and this collection contains records of the Canal Society of Ohio and Summit County Historical Society as well as published and unpublished materials, maps, and photographic prints and negatives, mainly documenting Ohio canals

Davidson, Dr. Herbert A., Papers

Herbert A. Davidson (1900-1974) was an African-American physician in Barberton, Ohio.  Active in numerous community organizations, he worked for justice and equality for all people throughout his lifetime. His papers consist of scrapbooks, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, and reports of numerous businesses and organizations he founded or directed including the American Welfare Workers Club, the Carver Thrift Club, and the Dunbar and Supreme Life Insurance companies.

Dales Family Papers

Range: 1895 - 1972 Size: .86 Record Group: 99/181

The George S. Dales Company was founded by George S. Dales Sr. in 1876. Known for selling jewelry, instruments, and Victrola's, it was handed down to George S. Dales Jr. and then to Gerald L. Dales and lasted until 1969. George Dales Jr's other son, George Franklin Dales, founded the George Franklin Dales company in 1946. Working with Mechanical Industries Production Company, he invented the Mighty Mite Thermostat. Included in the collection are 39 Glass plate negatives showing images from around the turn of the 19th-20th century.

D'Ianni, Dr. James D.,Collection of Alfin Rubber Materials

Dr. James D. D'Ianni (1914-2007) was a noted rubber scientist from Akron, Ohio who worked for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and is known for his contributions to the development of synthetic rubber during World War II. The collection contains materials relating to the development and usage of Alfin synthetic rubber by Dr. D'Ianni and Dr. Avery A Morton of M.I.T. and includes reports, graphs, tables, and correspondence.

Collections are classified into the following broad categories:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections documents regional (mainly Akron and Summit County) history, and other designated collecting areas. Special Collections materials include personal and family papers and historical records of local governments, businesses, and civic and community organizations. Collection strengths are the history of the rubber and polymer industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
