INFORMATION AND FAQ ON ALUMNI EMAIL CHANGE

In fall 2024, it was announced that the University of Akron will no longer be able to continue to support 1870.uakron.edu email accounts for former students effective July 1, 2025. 

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

This change is due to a significant rise in costs from Microsoft and an increased risk in cybersecurity and aligns with best practices in higher education locally, nationally, and globally. 

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

Users with an active @1870.uakron.edu are encouraged to create a new primary account and begin migrating their content or downloading their data before access to these accounts is discontinued on July 1, 2025. If you have used your @1870.uakron.edu email to register for websites, social media accounts, online shopping services, bank accounts, or other platforms, please update those settings with an alternate email address. Many popular and reputable free email services, such as Outlook, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail, are available.

If you have used your @1870.uakron.edu email to register for websites, social media accounts, online shopping services, bank accounts, or other platforms, please update those settings with an alternate email address.

Many popular and reputable free email services, such as Outlook, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail, are available.

If you are a current undergraduate, graduate student, employee, a retiree, or an emeriti, this change does not affect you.

After July 1, 2025 the data will be deleted.

If you are an existing student, your e-mail and OneDrive will be available for six months after you graduate.  During that time, please move your data to your preferred location.  Six months after you graduate your uakron.edu account will be disabled and data will be removed.

Alumni are responsible for backing up their own email and data prior to their @1870 account closing.

We recommend forwarding any messages you wish to keep to your personal email address.  

No. Alumni email accounts will close 6 months after graduation. There is no option to purchase additional years.

Due to security concerns the automatic mail forwarding is not an option for mail migration.
