UADC Student Focus
Kweku Bransah
Senior, Dance Major
"My experience with The University of Akron Dance Company (UADC) has been great. The choreographers are very creative and each have their own ways of teaching their work. I've learned to become an artist on stage and express myself individually while still within the frame of what the choreographer wants of me. I look forward to the connections that I make with the dancers and the growth that I make from each new piece of work that I am in."
Rebekah Gray
Freshman, Dance Major
"The University of Akron Dance Company (UADC) has been an overall outstanding experience. Not only have I gotten performance experience, but I have also been exposed to many choreographers from all over, and these choreographers have opened up new avenues for myself as a dancer."
Production Highlights
Palimpsest: Thoughts at the End of the World
Choreographed by Robin Prichard
Palimpsest: Thoughts at the End of the World explores the ideas of erasure. It begins from the questions: Is it possible to ever truly erase something? Can one ever fully remove an experience from the body? What will remain as elements become wiped away from our world? Are we always "writing" our present experiences over our faded pasts? Palimpsest suggests that sometimes the most interesting elements are those in which there are only traces left to be seen.
Almost and The Exact Speed of Regret
Choreographed by Robin Prichard
Almost and The Exact Speed of Regret are two interlinked pieces performed by an intergenerational mother/daughter cast. This duet explores the poignancy and indeterminacy of mother/daughter relationships. With tenderness and insight, this combination is dedicated to mothers and daughters everywhere.
I Got IT!
Choreographed by Melissa Edington
I Got IT! is the story of a girl who graduates from college and moves to New York City to pursue her dream of dancing on Broadway. Upon arriving in the Big City, she quickly discovers that in order to afford to live there, she will need to find a job, thus compromising her availability for Broadway auditions. As she tries to find the balance between her day job and the constant struggle that is being an unemployed performer, she becomes discouraged and chooses stability over constant rejection and uncertainty. Fortunately, she does not completely give up her dream, and after one last determined attempt, her dream of dancing on Broadway is realized.
Sweet Cello #1
Choreographed by Cydney Spohn
A cellist and eight dancers interact in concert to capture the vigorous yet whimsical side of Bach's famous work, Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major. This lively contemporary work showcases the dancers' dynamism and personalities with a display of austere baroque attitudes mingled with contrasting freewheeling behavior.
