Bierce Writing Commons

A place for writers

A student at a desk in the Bierce Writing Commons on the University of Akron campusThe Bierce Writing Commons, on the ground floor of Bierce Library, welcomes all University of Akron students who want to work on writing projects in any class. Trained writing consultants will help you at any point in your writing process …

  • brainstorming,
  • development,
  • organizing,
  • proofreading, or
  • working with outside sources and citation styles.

This free service is available to all University of Akron students from their first semester through their final writing project.

The skilled writing consultants at Bierce Writing Commons believe that writing is a collaborative process. We want to help you become a stronger and more confident writer.

A face-to-face session with a Bierce Writing Commons consultant is an ideal way to discuss and get feedback on your writing. However, because of time or geographic constraints, it may not always be possible for you to schedule an appointment in the Commons.

An alternative to Bierce Writing Commons is the Online Writing Lab, a service of the Ohio eTutoring Collaborative. With the Online Writing Lab, undergraduate students can submit a draft of a paper to a tutor and ask for specific feedback. Within 48 hours (sometimes longer during periods of peak usage), you receive your work back with a tutor’s comments. You are allowed to submit up to three drafts per paper. Please note that this is NOT a proofreading service. Like the consultants in Bierce Writing Commons, an Online Writing Lab tutor will give you suggestions as to how you can revise your own paper.

eTutoring is a free service for all currently enrolled undergraduate students at The University of Akron.  To access eTutoring, click here.
