Exercise Science as a Pathway to Medicine and Professional Health Programs
While there isn't a single "best" major for pursuing careers in medicine, physical therapy, athletic training, and other health-related professional careers, Exercise Science is often considered a strong and relevant choice for several reasons.
Relevant Coursework:
Our Exercise Science program will introduce students to anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and exercise prescription. You will have a deep understanding of how exercise and nutrition can prevent very common diseases.
Clinical Experience:
Our program incorporates clinical experience, providing students with hands-on opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-world settings. This exposure can be valuable for those considering careers in requiring advanced degrees.
Preparation for Advanced Studies:
Exercise Science can serve as an excellent foundation for advanced studies in medicine, physical therapy, or other health-related fields. The coursework often aligns with prerequisites for graduate programs in these areas. Students work with their academic advisor to select electives that meet the requirements of the graduate program of their choice.
Interdisciplinary Understanding:
Exercise Science majors often gain an interdisciplinary understanding of the human body, combining elements of biology, physiology, and movement science. This holistic perspective is beneficial to students who will one day be interacting with real patients and clients.
Emphasis on Prevention and Wellness:
Exercise Science programs emphasize preventive approaches to health and wellness. This focus aligns with the growing recognition of the importance of lifestyle factors in healthcare and can be advantageous in careers that promote overall well-being.
Flexibility in Career Paths:
Exercise Science provides a versatile foundation, allowing graduates to pursue various career paths within healthcare and fitness. Whether it's going into medicine, occupational therapy, chiropractic medicine, or another related field, the broad knowledge base can be advantageous.
Remember, getting into these advanced degree programs is very competitive. The key is to choose a major that aligns with your interests, strengths, and the specific requirements of the professional program you plan to pursue. Additionally, gaining relevant experience through internships, volunteer work, or research can further enhance your competitiveness in these fields.
