Math Department Scholarship Opportunities
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics currently offers these departmental scholarships:
New Funding: Master's Degrees and Honors College
The Department of Mathematics offers a variety of interdisciplinary accelerated 5-year BS/MS programs! This program meshes well with an Honors College thesis. Transition to the graduate program happens during the 4th year. Your Akron Scholarship or Honors College Scholarship can be used in the first 4 years to cover both undergraduate and graduate expenses, and the Department has graduate assistantships available for the 5th year. Planning early is the key to success for these programs; for more information, visit 5-year Master's or contact Dr. Pat Wilber, Graduate Coordinator of the Math Department, at email@example.com.
Dr. Mary E. Maxwell Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Mary E. Maxwell to honor her commitment as a mathematics teacher. Established in 1991, the fund provides awards for deserving mathematics majors in the freshman or sophomore year. Recipients of this award are named by the Department Chair upon recommendation of a faculty committee within The Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Incoming freshman may be considered for a Maxwell or Faculty Scholarship. If you are a high school student who is interested in majoring in mathematics at The University of Akron next fall, you may print out and submit the Freshman Scholarship Application Form to be considered for such an award.
The Faculty Scholarship
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics established The Faculty Scholarship in the spring of 2003. The scholarship is funded by contributions from departmental faculty and friends who wish to promote training in mathematics. Faculty Scholarships are awarded to departmental majors and incoming freshmen that have declared a major in mathematics. The primary consideration for an award is academic performance. Awards will be determined each year by the departmental Scholarship Committee. The amount of an award depends on the funds available.
Dr. Samuel E. Selby Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Samuel E. Selby, distinguished professor of mathematics at The University of Akron and head of its Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1945 until his retirement in 1968, this endowed fund provides scholarship support for outstanding University undergraduate or graduate students pursuing courses in mathematics. The recipients and the amount of the awards are recommended by the faculty of the department and approved by the University Scholarship Committee.
The Ricardo Francisco Garzia Endowed Scholarship for Graduate Students in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering

The Alberta M. and William C. King Scholarship Fund
The Alberta M. and William C. King Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 as a memorial to Alberta M. King, wife of William. The scholarship fund recognizes Mrs. King's belief in the value of higher education and Mr. King's appreciation of his civil engineering degree earned at The University of Akron. One King Scholarship is awarded to an engineering major by the College of Engineering, and one King Scholarship is awarded to a mathematics major by The Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics. Recipients must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better. The scholarship may be renewed in the following year if the recipient maintains the academic qualifications.
As a tribute to our many alumni and their generous donations made to The Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics, the Scholarship Committee has established an Alumni Scholarship Award. The funds provide scholarship support for outstanding students majoring in the mathematical sciences.
